Hypothesis

India could be source of Mad Cow: Scientist

Hindus believe remains should be disposed of in a river, preferably the Ganges.

Human remains washed ashore after being floated downriver (Ganges) in Indian funerals, claim British scientists.

"We do not claim that our theory is proved, but it unquestionably warrants further investigation," the scientists wrote.

"Scientists must proceed cautiously when hypothesizing about a disease that has such wide geographic, cultural and religious implications." - Dr Susaria Shankar

Hindus do not put half-burnt bodies into the river," they wrote, adding that if bodies found in the Ganges did have CJD, there should have been a major epidemic of the disease in north India.

Indian neuroscientists Susarla Shankar and P. Satishchandra of the National institute of mental health and neurosciences in Bangalore, India, said they agreed the theory needs to be followed up, but urged caution

I dont think We believe in disposing human remains in the Ganges River (I might be wrong). But, I heard from someone who visited Ganges said that because they have a lot of dead bodies waiting to be burned, they just toss those half-burned bodies into the river. How irresponsible! :/ 11:02 PM

No . . We don't dipose human remains in the Ganges or anywhere. We cremate/incinerate which means to burn a corpse until only ashes are left! And the ashes which is called "Ashti" is disposed the the Holy Ganges. But As the UK Scientists said people who are not able to afford the expenses do dispose the corpses in the river which is against the law in India. But my question here is that if the prions came from the bodies from India WHY India or its neighbouring countries do not have any or even a sign of mad cow decease??? 2:27 PM

True. I think they just dragging India into this coz we worship the cow (and all that), I think.

The main source of Mad Cow disease is that they gave (still do) meat to the cows. 10:52 PM
